Since I was a kid, I used to go to church with my mom
She loved to hear me sing, loved the way I was
I thought it was a good place to be
But the people weren't good to me

They used to say

Thank God my mom was amazing
She heard all that and thought
There's nothing wrong with my son

But you know how people are
They care more about your life than their own

That's when I started to understand
There was nothing wrong with me
I was just a kid
Even if I didn't like boy stuff
Even if I was a sweet kid
Even if I was a little gay boy: Like they used to say
I was still just a kid
I deserved respect
The respect they didn't give me or my mom

So now I'm here to say

Irresponsible adults, this one's for you!
How many times did you laugh at me?
Told your kids to beat me up?
Be a man, speak tough
Change that way of yours
That's not how a man behaves!

I heard it over and over
I was just a child
And I couldn't defend myself
But now I'm grown
And I'm here to say

Years passed
And I felt this weight inside
A teen going through puberty
Trying to fit in

I didn't feel attraction to girls
But religion told me to fake it
Still, the girls didn't want me
I wasn't the macho type they looked for
I was always just a friend

That feeling was heavy
I had no one to talk to about it
How many times did I cry in my room, alone?
Asking God to take those feelings away
But after the prayer, nothing happened

And you know why?
Because there was nothing wrong with me
God is love, He made me this way
He created me and knows exactly who I am
So fuck what the others think or say
