I rolled into that County with a poker face for hire
Lookin' for free whiskey and a game I could acquire
Old boy muttered, Son, this town don't play no games
Sheriff hangs men out to dry and remembers every name
I said, I've outrun hounds, deputies, judges too
Ain't a badge in God's creation can make me tell the truth
The law's just another card game, I wrote the cheats they matched
And prison ain't that bad, them padlocks click like a bra unlatched
Then the front door swung wide, my heartbeat pled its case
I checked my drink for poison, every card for hidden trace
A man like me don't tremble at boots and silver stars
Somehow somebody issued a warrant for my heart
Caught red-handed though nobody touched a thing
Just a red lipstick on my whiskey like she'd dusted it for prints
Love in the first degree, no appeal that I could plead
The toughest sentence was her lookin' back at me
She'd beat me to the alley, she'd beat me to the bridge
I'd ride the dark through nowhere, she'd already held the ridge
Even on a beer run, she picked up my trail
She sipped my whiskey, Boy, I'ma put your ass in jail
Then I got lost in the crowd, found my pickup somehow
Locked every door sayin', They won't catch me now
Boots hit the truck bed, then her voice cut through
You oughta check who's ridin' home with you, outlaw
She read my report, crossin' out every tale they told
Six foot four? Mighty kind But that mugshot's gettin' old
I laughed to myself, couldn't help but grin
I'd finally found someone who could always win
Caught red-handed though nobody touched a thing
Just a red lipstick on my whiskey like she'd dusted it for prints
Love in the first degree, no appeal that I could plead
The toughest sentence was her lookin' back at me
No sheriff ever cornered me, I'd always disappeared
Now I didn't mind her getting near
'Cause suddenly the safest place I'd ever been
Was the danger I was in
Caught red-handed though nobody touched a thing
Just a red lipstick on my whiskey like she'd dusted it for prints
Love in the first degree, no appeal that I could plead
The toughest sentence was her lookin' back at me
